The Legend of Giovanni’s
It was a damp, gray overcast day as Mama and Papa Segio stood at the dock to board a ship for America. They were but two of many who were leaving Italy that day for a new life in a new country. Even the weather couldn’t dampen their spirits.
Being newly weds; they had little to take with them. Tucked away in their meager belongings were Mama Segio’s old-world recipes of fine Italian cooking. These recipes had been passed down from generation to generation and were the most treasured of all their possessions.
After arriving in America, Papa Segio got a job and soon they started raising a family. They had nine Segio’s in all and each grew up fast and healthy, thanks to Mama Segio’s tasty Italian cooking.
The Oldest of the children was Pasta. He grew up a little faster and slightly wider. He was always in the kitchen sampling Mama’s cooking. In fact, he spent so much time in the kitchen that he soon learned all of Mama’s secret recipes. He liked to help her with the sauces and meats, but his favorite pastime was making pizza and pastas.
He became a master at making the lightest, fluffiest tasting pastas and the most heavenly pizzas. Even Mama had to praise his cooking. Curly ones, wide ones, long ones – all were the tastiest pastas ever, as were the pizzas, thin ones, thick ones, round ones, square ones.
Soon everyone wanted Pasta Segio’s pizza and pastas. Now he spent all his time in the kitchen, filling orders for friends and strangers alike. Word of his famous pizza and pasta spread…along with his waistline. Pasta thought if people here loved his pizza and pasta so much, why not take his talents to some place where they can’t get his great tasting pizza and pastas. After all, people everywhere deserved a taste of his fabulous Italian cooking!! Besides, Mama could handle the guests here. “That’s it” said Pasta. I’ll open a place, maybe several.
Since the Prescott Valley/Prescott area was the most unlikely place to find great tasting pizza and pasta, Pasta Segio decided to move to great Southwest where they were truly in need of his culinary expertise. Pasta and his wife Billie took over Giovanni’s Pizza. His delicious dishes, famous pastas and heavenly pizzas were overnight successes. Pasta Segio had come a long way. They owed it all to Mama Segio and her family recipes. It was the Segio cooking that made him famous, and the family name had to be included in his successes. They would call their restaurants Pizza & Pasta da Segio’s. Now you too can enjoy the great cooking that the Segio family has enjoyed for generations.
